About the Festival
Incontri di Canna - History and Introduction
Since 1997, under the direction of Jeremy and William Findlay (at the invitation of the comune of Canna), a summer chamber music festival has taken place every year, both in Canna and in neighboring towns, performed by musicians from all of the important musical centers of the world.
For three weeks a year, the residents of Canna, summer guests and even people from as far away as Taranto (people who have camper vans) have enjoyed some of the finest chamber masterpieces ever written, performed to the highest standards—music for strings, piano, some woodwinds, and singers.
Initially, our concerts were held in the beautiful Chiesa Madre and in the Santuario Madonna del Succorso, thanks to the gracious support of the clergy; however, two years ago, we were able, via a government grant and generous individual donations, to acquire and to renovate the first floor of the Palazzo Jelpo as an arts and cultural centre—now the Palazzo Delle Culture - and as our new home. Today the concerts are held in our acoustically satisfying hall.
For the musicians who donate their services, the festival is a wonderful performing holiday. The calibre of music-making is exciting, on the one hand, and, on the other, the people of Canna are warm and welcoming. The food—served at the fabulous Le Logge restaurant or outdoors in the garden of the L'Isola Che Non C'e - is exquisite, the fine accommodations, either in private homes or in the local villa; and frequent trips to the beach, to the mountains or to many of the ancient historical sites make for a memorable and unique holiday for many of the top artists from Europe, North America, China, Korea and Japan.
Some of the musicians have become so enchanted by Canna that they actually have purchased their own apartments.
